I can't quite formulate coherent thoughts yet, as I'm still gathering the pieces to my blown brain. Can you?

Well- it was definitely a through the looking glass kind of experience- wasn't it. Most intriguing finale so far.

I had a bit of an argument with my friend about where Lost will go from here. I thought by ending the episode in the future, it signaled a transition to the future--have we ever ended an episode which is not in the present time?--and that this is where next season would take off from. However, my friend thought the first set of episodes will take us off the island and up to that point, then the rest will go from that future time.
This reminds me very much of the Alias 2-year-gap finale, except of course that our characters know very well what happened to them and it is only us which is left wondering.

The first thing that has me really, really puzzled (as opposed to just plain really puzzled) is that the flashes made it *seem* as though the elder Dr. Shepherd is still alive! WTF? ? ? ? ? ?
As for "who died"...I hate to play the race card, but it seemed like Jack was in a black neighborhood and at a black funeral parlor...so could it have been Michael? After all, Kate certainly wouldn't have wanted to go to *his* funeral.
And what is up with Patchy? Is he out of Harry Potter...some cat with nine lives?? Are we so sure he's dead *now*??
I have to go out of town tomorrow, so I can't rewatch...but I damn well will be doing so at the first opportunity.
Hey, did anyone guess it would be Kate at the end? What did people think? I was starting to think it might be Penny...

P.S. Brian, I advise you to take your time analyzing the episode (actually, at this point--the whole damn series) and writing the analysis. Goodness knows, you've got plenty of time to do it! Yeeeeeesh!!!

I posted this on the blog as well, but just cuz we all can't get enough....
Well, for having your mind blown, you did a pretty darn good job!
Brian - I love your interpretation of how the flash-forwards changes the format of the show. It would be brilliant to now switch to Island-time being the flashbacks and the future being the personal stories! But did anyone else get the sense that with Jack's "we have to go back" cries - he could have been talking about both place AND time? I usually shy away from the more sci-fi explanations of LOST, but I was sensing a little hint of time travel there. Maybe? Anyone?
And yes, I absolutely wanted to cheer for Hurley! He saved the day AND his self-esteem, all with the help of the VW van and some Three Dog Night. (I'm assuming it was still playing!)
Good stuff! Much to discuss! I bet we can even make it to February on this one!

I was actually incorrectly thinking it might be Naomi...in the past...

With Jack making his "ask my father" comment, I assumed we were in a true flashback (very clever on the writers' part to include it to throw us off), but once we saw Jack sitting in his room, surrounded by maps of Islands and the Pacific, I knew we were in the future - which made Kate the most likely candidate to be on the other side of his phone conversation. I was still in sort of a "no way that is going to be Kate" mode - but then when it happened, I was like "I knew it!"

When I saw those maps of the Pacific in his house, that was the first clue for me, but it didn't click until I saw Kate. I thought it would be anyone but her, really.

I didn't pick up on the maps while watching... but do you think that means that even after leaving the Island, they still don't know where it is?

Well it seems like once you leave Oz/Wonderland... you can't go back.
Also, I yelled why Sayid, our resident badass, snapped the Other's guy neck with his ankles. Me loves me some Sayid.

On the last podcast, Cuse & Lindelof said something to the effect that we'd have a pretty good idea where Season 4 would be heading based on the end to this season. So Brian...and Stef...and Dakkona...you could all be right to some extent. And to take Stef's thought even farther, what if we will now see alternate timelines, just as it seems we did with Desmond? My gut feeling about that, though, is that it would take far more than 48 episodes to resolve! B.L. P.S. Brian, good catch on the maps. No wonder you're our leader, our...Ben!

I'm seriously thinking alternate timelines, unless I am really missing something.
Other Brian: I think Jack's father still IS alive in this timeline shown in the flash forward. There were two references to him: First, Jack's other prescription was written by Christian Shepard. Maybe Jack just forged it, but with Oxycodone, he's knows there would be scrutiny if a dead dr started writing scrips for it. Maybe he doesn't care. But when having the showdown with the head of surgery dr, Jack says, "Get my father down here now, and if I'm more drunk than he is, you can fire me." So I really think he's ALIVE.
Which introduces serious problems--Jack's father dying is a big part of why he gets on 815 and ends up on the Island in our timeline thus far.
There's that thing the producers said about finding out the house has many rooms--I think they're talking alternate timelines, and we've just seen one version of how things might happen. I think Desmond may be the key, because he seems to have some ability to see what could happen and thus to alter it. So they will have to go back.
Interesting that Locke still can't kill anyone, even to save the Island.
