Okay, my only instant reaction outside of OMG OMG OMG... seriously?  OMG!  Is that Ben said to Sayid (after Sayid said his father was also an SOB) was "I really HATED him" (emphasis on "hated" as if he already knew he was going to die?).

I completely think Ben and a select few have knowledge of future events and are hard at work "course correcting."  Desmond and Farraday are wild cards.  The only question is, who is good and who is bad.............................................  and does it really matter?

First off, I do not think Ben is really dead. Of course he isn't. I do, however, think that the event of him getting shot will lead to his introduction to Jacob, and hopefully and finally, ours as well.

Man, Lost is the only show that can get away with shooting an unarmed twelve year old.

Yeah, that was the most shocking part. Especially a kid that looks so much like Harry Potter!

I'm with Brian.  After Sayid shot young Ben, I didn't expect him to fall (which was going to be much to Sayid's amazement).  After he fell, I was waiting for him to get right back up.  Maybe next week.  And I was really feeling sorry for Ben after watching his horrible father in action.  Poor little dude.

I can see Ben being like Locke after Ben shot him and like Michael when he tried to kill himself--he just won't die if it's not time for him to die.  But I don't think he can be like Locke who was reanimated after returning to the Island, because then he should never be able to leave the Island (I think) and we know that he does in the future.

Regarding Ilana--another possibility is that Ben tipped off the family of the man he had Sayid kill and told them where to find Sayid.  How convenient that they live in Guam.

Maybe we just witnessed Ben's first dirty trick--sending the flaming bus through the camp to draw security away from Sayid.  And later I was thinking that Sayid may end up teaching Ninja moves to Ben (after he gets back up).

I didn't really think much of the chicken scene.  Guess it depicts Sayid as a fellow who is always willing to do what it takes--and it's true that that's what he did to become an interrogator in Iraq.  But he ended up not following through and freed Nadia.  It just doesn't seem to be one of the more illuminating flashbacks.

Musings:

- Just finished watching a few seconds ago then immediately came on to see the Instant Reactions.  I like Ben.  I like the actor and I like a master-manipulating, Palpatine type villain.  I don't know why, I just do.  Notice how much richer of a character Ben is than the protagonists, backstory not withstanding?  It's not just the mystery, its the fact that people that very intelligent and perceptive people can impact a much wider circle of events when they go bad. (?)  I still hope for redemption for poor Ben, but man, he's done some straight up evil things, no doubt.
My mouth was gaped wide open for about a minute straight there at the end.  All I could think of is how the future would change with Ben not in it.  But of course he's not dead, duh...  As Christian said, its called sacrifice for a reason.  Some of the loose ends are starting to come together now.

- Although I thought Sayid would try and eliminate young Ben this past week, I didn't anticipate he would see with his own eyes the way the kid was so clearly abused and still go forward.  Young Ben is innocent at this point, after all.

- I wonder if it would be worth it to dig out Season 2 and watch Sayid and Ben in the hatch.  Do you think there is any chance it would play differently now?  Then again, Emerson played the Henry Gale role so creepily that you could read most anything into his stares and sneers.

- I hope this fast tracks us to Jacob too, but it looks like next week is dharma barracks heavy

- I feel that Miles, even more than Faraday, is missing.  Now that Sawyer is so serious, I feel the need for levity in some of these scenes, and they write for Miles brilliantly.

- All the talk about who Illana is, yet I still think its an open possibility that either her or Caesar are Widmore's plant.  Do we really think he would miss out on getting someone there when he knew they were all going back?  I'm not sure its a slam dunk that Eloise wouldn't have tipped him off either.  How else would he reintroduce himself into this rather self-contained storyline?

- I thought this Dharma torturer might be someone we already knew but I was So, so happy to see one of my favorite actors - William Sanderson.  Most people will remember him from Larry,Darryl and Darryl fame in Newheart, but he was brilliant in Deadwood.  (Another very well written show that was yanked before its time)

- Kate better leave Sawyer and Juliet alone, but she won't.  She's selfish and she's quickly becoming my least favorite character now that Red is dead.

- Poor Jin - always getting knocked the f out.

- The actor who plays Horace is also impressing me.  He was such a bastard in the Green Mile, but he's really got a quirk that's intriguing.  "Hello, there..."  I always see him with a bloody nose chopping down a tree, tho.  Even after its over, we'll have to thank Lost, since the show has uncovered some real gems in the supporting cast.  Emerson, Hutchison, Reddick, Carbonell, Gainey, Durrand, Dale, Mitchell and now Sanderson.  These actors steal the scenes they are in and I just fixate on their craft as they speak.

A few thoughts of my own here.

-  Ben may have shot Locke to help facilitate Locke transition to being a man of the Island.  Someone who was healed and held up for the others to see for a greater purpose. Ben may somehow know that Locke needs to have that happen to make the circle complete.  He knows how to get him there because he himself was healed after being fatally shot by Sayid.

-  Juliet clearly saw Sawyer looking at Kate when he got out of the van and not at her.  She was definitely not happy about it.

-  I believe that Horace did listen to what Sayid was saying under the influence of the drugs.  He seemed fascinated by what Sayid said even to the point of tell Radzinski to shut up so Sayid could keep talking.  I think that they will shift their focus to the time traveling bunnies once they report to Marvin Candle what happened.

-  Sayid must have destroyed the videotape to the prison cell or else they could easily see that young Ben let him out.

-  Anyone else think that Sawyer was looking for Jack to get ideas on how to help Sayid?

When Sayid first shot young Ben, I was like "OH NOOOOOOO!"  but then I realized that older Ben just COULD NOT exist if Sayid really killed him when he was young.  Also, I knew when they showed young Ben lying on the ground in next week's preview he wasn't dead - and remember how quickly Ben healed up once he got back to the Island?

I'm in full support of the "Whatever happened, happened" theory.  So much so that I'm willing to say Ben is dead, and that's WHY he ends up being a leader to the others.  Clearly they've got a thing for leaders who were once dead, but came back to life again.  Perhaps this could even be what starts or rather enables his communication with Island Spirit Jacob.  And maybe that's why Alpert never ages.  Maybe he died once too, got resurrected, and so the Others made him leader.  Bottom line: Ben's dead and it's not the first time!   Wink

Sounds like someone finally has a firm grasp on the whatever happens happened theory!

Anyone else reminded of season 2 episode 10 Eko's episode?
Young Sayid killing for his brother/ Eko killing for his brother....
lots of comparisons.

Jeff Jensen at ew.com has a theory that season 3 mirrors season 4,
season 2 mirrors season 5 and season 1 will mirror season 6.

very cool i think.

Yes, extremely creative and funny!

And, once again, Sawyer had the best line of the night: "Three years and no burning cars- You guys have been here one day!"  I laughed out loud.

One thing to remember, though: the previous times the island hasn't let someone die by gunshot, the gun either jammed or shot a nonvital part. When Locke was shot, it was in the space his kidney would have been. This may be something special. Maybe Richard will find Ben and ask Jacob to heal him, rather than it being a choice of the island.
