Brian...outstanding analysis!! Now, I'm totally sure you are a writer for LOST! One question....due to my lack of memory I am confused about something (should not surprise many). At what point in time was the statue destroyed...leaving only the foot? Or was there another statue where AJ resided that was destroyed? I can't seem to get that straight in my mind...

And what's with the 4-toed thing? Did Tawaret only have 4 toes?

According to Lostpedia, Tawaret did have 4 toes (as do hippopotamuses in real life).

Brian,
Thanks for the lenghty and thorough recap.
I'm going to have to disagree with you about Jacob and AJ answering to Smokey though.
- In the temple when Ben was being judged, we saw a picture of Smokey and a Jackal-headed figure (presumably Anubis). It seemed to me that Anubis was giving an order to a subservient Smokey. - Smokey has a close association with the appearance of people and animals that are known to be dead (Kate's Horse, Christian Shephard, Kemi) - AJ has the ability to take on the form of dead people (John Locke) - Smokey and AJ as John Locke were never seen together in the same place (Clark Kent phenomenon)
It's my belief that either Smokey and AJ are the same entity, or that Smokey is a sort of pet to AJ that does his bidding. I think Jacob's touch protects those whom he touches from the wrath of AJ and Smokey.

Have we ever seen Christian Shephard's body? When Jack found his coffin it was empty(season 1?). We all thought Locke was Locke until we saw his body. If AJ is pretending to be Christian Shephard, where is his body??

I can't believe it's that time of year. I hate saying goodbye for so long.... Such a happy surprise to have your review so soon. Although it was fun anticipating it the last few summers. (Not really, after checking everyday, I would be shouting "Where are you Brian?! And where is my analysis?!) All week long I was trying to come up with a clever name for Man #2 (Fake Locke = Flock!) But I told myself, hang on, Brian will come up with a perfect name....AJ! Love it and made me laugh! Love the idea of AJ's healing of Ben as a child marred him from having a relationship with Jacob. Too bad it wasn't Ben's choice, but he has been a tragic figure all along just like Locke. Hope everyone has a great summer, (fall and winter too!) I can't believe we have to wait so long!!! I'll be checking in now and then. See ya!

If you go back and watch Episode 5 of Season 1 entitled "White Rabbit," one of the flashback scenes details the argument between Jack and an Oceanic employee in Sydney. They are arguing over whether the airline will transport Christian's body or leave it in Sydney because of a lack of proper forms/paperwork. That flashback is immediately followed by the scene on the island where Jack finds his father's coffin, but no corpse. This started the debate about whether Christian's body ever made it to the island or is still back in Sydney. After the Oceanic 6 returned to the states, Jack had his dad's funeral, but I believe it was confirmed in the recap show before "The Incident" that Christian's body was not present for that ceremony. If the body had been left in Sydney, you'd think they would have shipped it to the states once Jack got back from the island. He was only gone for a few months, right? Maybe Christian's body made it to the island and AJ and Smokey disposed of it...

Thanks as always Brian.
Your analysis intrigued me quite a bit and it rings true if not being exactly what's going on. I have a feeling that I'm now going to spend my off-season watching every episode so far over again. There is enough now to chew on that has the possibility of putting every scene in a different light. (except perhaps some character-building backstories and, strangely, almost all of the tailies stuff)

Did we ever saw an Other kill another Other?
How about Eloise killing Daniel?

I figured I'd be out here contemplating and guessing and questioning, but this was such a great episode, and Brian's analysis was so thorough, I really don't have a lot to say!
I'll keep an eye out here for tidbits (and the Season 5 wrap up) though... but man I hate the down time between seasons!!! ACK!

Also Charles Widmore killed his friend when he started to talk to our survivors back in 50's...

One funny thing I noticed--people have hypothesized that Widmore and Eloise were co-leaders of the Others. But in the finale, Richard said, "There can be only one leader." And he clearly said that Eloise was the leader when he stopped her from going up the stairs with the Jack and Sayid and the plutonium. So when was Widmore the leader? After that? Maybe after she leaves pregnant or with her child?
